DublinAbout radio
RTÉ 2XM is a digital radio station operated by Ireland's public broadcaster, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). Launched in December 2008, it focuses on alternative and independent music, featuring genres such as rock, indie, metal, electronica, and nu-metal. The station also emphasizes homegrown Irish artists, providing a platform for emerging and established talent.
Listeners can access RTÉ 2XM through various platforms, including the RTÉ Radio App, the RTÉ website, and on Saorview, Ireland's free-to-air digital terrestrial television service, where it is available on Channel 206. Additionally, the station can be found on Virgin Media Channel 944.
Over the years, RTÉ 2XM has featured a variety of programs hosted by both RTÉ staff and freelance presenters from Ireland's music community. Notable shows include "The Alternative" with Dan Hegarty, which airs on weekday afternoons, and "Amplify" with Ailsha, known for her contributions to the alternative metal scene.
In November 2023, RTÉ announced plans to close several of its digital-only services, including RTÉ 2XM, as part of an internal restructuring aimed at cost-saving. The station is scheduled to cease operations in 2024.
